While one wildfire grew to more than 2,000 acres Sunday, another much smaller one threatened homes and prompted a voluntary evacuation.
There was a voluntary evacuation in place Sunday night for the Pine Mountain subdivision, which is in northeastern Sanpete County. The 30-acre blaze, dubbed the Aspen Springs Fire, is burning east of Spring City, which is about 2 miles south of Mount Pleasant. The Sanpete County Sheriff's Office announced through its Twitter feed that the flames are threatening structures as it moves southwest. There are as many as 50 homes in the area of the fire.
Crews caught some breaks trying to contain the fire, which was "laying down" and moving much slower as of 8:12 p.m., the sheriff's office tweeted. They hoped to cut a fire line with a bulldozer during the night to help contain the fire.
Meanwhile, a fast-moving wildfire in rural northern Box Elder County had consumed about 2,600 acres by Sunday morning.
The blaze started about 8 a.m. Saturday in a recreational area known as the Devil's Playground, which is about 35 miles west and south of Snowville.
The fire was 30 percent contained as of Sunday morning.
Firefighters were concerned about a handful of buildings that could potentially be in the fire's path — a cabin, an outbuilding and a military communications center about 5 miles south of the fire line.
