A head-on collision Saturday on Interstate 80 in Summit County killed two women.

The accident happened about 2:30 p.m. on Interstate 80 at mile marker 170, which is east of Echo Canyon Reservoir and about 12 miles north of Coalville.

Utah Highway Patrol spokesman Jesse Valenzuela said that an eastbound Mazda sedan driven by 29-year-old Kallie Nelson crossed the median into the westbound lanes and struck a Mercury sport utility vehicle driven by Judith Nethercott, 65. The crash killed both drivers, who were the only occupants in their respective vehicles. Both women died at the scene.

Officials continued to investigate Saturday why Nelson's car crossed into the opposite lane.
