Cache County Search and Rescue workers found a Smithfield couple alive late Thursday morning, the day after they had been reported missing while on a hike in the mountains above Logan.
Sheriff's Lt. Brian Locke said that about 11:30 a.m., Chad Hansen, 42, and his wife, Lynn Hansen, 40, along with their three dogs, were found on the same trail they had embarked on Wednesday morning from the Tony Grove area.
"The both appear to be fine. They just got turned around up there, got lost for a while and decided to just hunker down for the night. They were back on the trail, backtracking to Tony Grove, when we found them," Locke said.
Searchers hiked back to Tony Grove with the couple and their dogs.
Locke said the couple's 16-year-old son called 911 about 10:45 p.m. Wednesday after his parents failed to return as planned at 1 p.m. from an excursion that began in the Tony Grove area of Logan Canyon.
The couple had told the boy they intended to hike seven miles through Logan Canyon to the top of Smithfield Canyon and then return home.
Locke said searchers were forced to call off their efforts 2:30 a.m. Thursday but resumed the search shortly after dawn.
The couple had water and food with them.
