Crews reopened State Road 39 late Wednesday afternoon after a rock slide near the mouth of Ogden Canyon shut it down.
Shortly before noon Wednesday, a coupling on a two-foot water main broke and caused the rock and mud slide about a quarter mile from the mouth of the canyon, according to the Utah Department of Transportation. The slide damaged State Road 39 and some concrete barriers as it washed debris across the roadway, said UDOT spokesman John Gleason.
The water line was about 100 years old and was scheduled to be replaced with a new line before Christmas, said Jay Lowder, director of Ogden public services. Because of the break and the diminished amount of water flowing into the city, Lowder urged people to conserve water until Friday.
Crews cleaned up the mess and reopened the road by 5:15 p.m.
