The roads around Hill Air Force Base will fill up with motorcyclists on Thursday, and the ride's organizers hope the large group reminds everyone to keep an eye out for the bikers, who should be driving defensively, every day.
Hill AFB is holding the fourth annual See Me, Save Me campaign ride, which will stage at 10:30 a.m. on base and make a circular route through local communities before finishing at the Hill Aerospace Museum, 7961 Wardleigh Rd., Hill AFB.
Anyone outside of HAFB interested in joining the ride should show up at the aerospace museum at 10:45 a.m. and follow the group as it leaves at 11 a.m., according to a news release.
"The purpose [of] the ride is to motivate motorists to take a second look, specifically for motorcyclists, and to share the road with the smaller traffic including bicyclists and pedestrians," said Allan Woods, Hill AFB's Motorcycle Safety Program manager, in a statement.
In 2012, there were 33 motorcycle-related fatalities in Utah, according to the Utah "Zero Fatalities" campaign website. That year, as well as in 2011, the base lost one of its own in such a crash, Woods added in his statement.
Law enforcement will escort the riders so that they do not have to stop for lights, and will close intersections for them as the ride progresses, according to the release.
