A baby boy was in state custody and his mother could face child-abandonment charges after police found the infant unattended on a downtown Salt Lake City street.

Salt Lake City police Detective Veronica Montoya said the baby, no older than three months, was spotted by a passer-by asleep in a stroller on the sidewalk in front of 260 A Street about 6 a.m. Monday.

It took several hours to locate the infant's 32-year-old mother, Montoya said.

"She really didn't have an excuse [for officers]. That's why charges are being screened against the mother," Montoya said.

The mother was not arrested, pending city prosecutors' review of the case. But the baby was placed in the care of the Utah Division of Child and Family Services.
