Gov. Gary Herbert has appointed two women to the board overseeing public colleges and universities in Utah.
Board of Regents appointee Jesselie Anderson has previously served as chair of the board of trustees at Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) and as a Westminster College trustee. Anderson, who serves on multiple boards ranging from the arts to hospitals, will replace Nolan Karras, a former Utah House speaker and co-chairman of the group Education First.
Herbert also appointed Joyce Valdez, a community liaison for Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker. She is also a member of the University of Utah board of trustees and a former adviser in a program for single parents at SLCC. She replaces Marlon Snow, a former Utah state representative and State Board of Education member.
Anderson and Valdez must also be confirmed by the Utah Senate. The governor appoints 15 members of the 20-member board, each for a six-year term. Two student regents serve two-year terms. The final three regents serve as nonvoting members without a set term; two are from the State Board of Education and another is from the Utah College of Applied Technology. They are appointed by their respective boards.
