A fugitive's flight from justice finally came to an end in West Jordan — but not until law officers were forced to shoot out the tires of a truck and send a police dog through a broken out window to subdue the man.
Unified Police say Brian "King Crip" Platt, 36, wasn't done fighting even after multiple dog bites, scuffling with officers as they pulled him out of the truck during a Sunday night traffic stop near 5900 West and 6400 South.
Platt was booked into the Salt Lake County jail, where he remained Monday in lieu of nearly $72,000 bail. He was being held on suspicion of multiple felony and misdemeanor counts, ranging from kidnapping, possession of stolen property and obstruction of justice to theft, possession of drug paraphernalia and numerous traffic-related violations.
The kidnapping charge related to a man and woman also inside the truck, who had attempted to stop Platt when he allegedly floored the gas pedal from his passenger's side seat in an attempt to force the driver to flee police. The male driver instead slammed on the brakes with both feet, causing the vehicle to spin its wheels and bounce repeatedly in place, at one point reportedly striking — but not seriously injuring — a K9 officer.
One of the officers then shot out the driver's side tires. Other officers broke out the passenger's side window and the police dog bounded through to attack Platt.
After a brief struggle with the canine and officers, Platt was arrested, taken to the hospital for treatment of the dog bites and then taken to jail early Monday morning.
A 30-year-old female also was arrested and booked for obstructing justice.
According to a probable cause statement, Platt admitted to detectives that he had taken the keys from the truck's driver during the traffic stop, restarted the vehicle and then had attempted to drive away.
Platt, whose past criminal record includes arrests for burglary and receiving stolen property, had been sought by police since escaping custody last week.
