A lightning strike caused a small fire in the upper room of a Weber County home during the storms that hit northern Utah on Saturday.
Weber Fire District Capt. Tom Sexton said firefighters were called to a home in the Uintah Highland area south of Ogden at about 6:45 p.m. after lightning struck the wooden turret on the roof of a Victorian-style house.
The strike caused a small fire that spread into an upper room of the house, which firefighters were able to extinguish from the inside. In all, the fire caused between $15,000 and $20,000 in damage, Sexton said.
The home, although built in an older style, is only about 10 years old, Sexton said. There was no other damage in the rest of the two-story house.
Weather forecasters with the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City had been warning of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms throughout the day Saturday along the northern Wasatch Front.
The strongest storms passed through Salt Lake and up to Ogden. The weather service also issued a flood warning for parts of southern Davis County.
