Mother Nature must have finally had mercy on Utah because this weekend will have better weather than the work week before or after.
Temperatures Saturday and Sunday along the Wasatch Front will continue the so-called cooling trend, dropping all the way down to the mid 90s. Lows will hover around 70 degrees in the Salt Lake and Tooele Valleys. In Utah and Weber counties, temperatures will go as low as the mid 60s at night.
Rain and cloud cover will offer further reprieve from the record-melting heat of last weekend. According to the National Weather Service, there is a 30 percent chance of thunderstorms Saturday afternoon and a 40 percent chance Saturday night. Intermittent clouds and precipitation should hang around until Monday.
But don't get too comfortable; cities along the Wasatch Front will see a gradual warming trend over the next few days, with temperatures rising at least to the upper 90s by next weekend.
In southern Utah, temperatures will fluctuate between high and ridiculously high. The National Weather Service forecasts highs in the lower 100s Saturday and Sunday for St. George with a 20 percent chance of thunderstorms. By the end of the week, St. George will be experiencing highs around 108 degrees.
The Utah Division of Air Quality also advises many Utahns to hold their breath for a day or so. Or rather, Saturday in Salt Lake, Davis and Weber counties the air quality will be moderate with an "air action" alert — meaning the air might be dangerous for people who are sensitive or who do a lot outdoors. Air quality along the Wasatch Front will improve Sunday. In Southern Utah, air quality will be good through the weekend.
Forecasters predicted highs in Salt Lake City of 94 degrees Saturday and 95 degrees Sunday; Ogden looked for 90 and 91, respectively; Provo 93 and 94; Logan 97 and 90; Wendover 92 and 93; Duchesne 88 and 87; Cedar City 91 and 91; St. George 104 and 103; and Moab, 99 and 98 degrees.
