The Roy police chief is on paid leave pending the outcome of an investigation into complaints against him.
About a week and a half ago, Roy City began receiving several anonymous e-mails — that city leaders believe were all sent from the same person — leveling allegations against Roy Police Chief Greg Whinham, said Mayor Joe Ritchie on Wednesday.
Ritchie called the city council together and they decided to put Whinham on paid administrative leave while the Layton City Attorney's Office investigates whether the accusations have any merit.
"If it hadn't been a public official... we wouldn't have given it much credibility," Ritchie said. "I don't like anonymous complaints."
Ritchie declined to comment on the nature of the allegations or their severity, except that they are "non-criminal."
He expects the outside investigation to wrap up before the weekend. Once the findings reach his office, he will call the city council back together for a closed meeting to discuss them and decide where to go from there.
"I think it will all play out in a positive way," Whiham said, declining further comment.
Ritchie did not know if there would be any repercussions against the author of the e-mails if the allegations turned out to be false, especially considering they do not know who the author is.
Layton City Attorney Steve Garside declined to comment, referring questions about the matter to Roy City.
