Salt Lake City's new high-tech parking meter system is on the fritz.

So, for the time being, it's free parking downtown.

The systemwide glitch was noticed by Salt Lake City parking services sometime Monday morning, said City Hall spokesman Art Raymond. As such, parking enforcement has been suspended until further notice.

It is not known whether the record high temperatures played a role in the malfunction of the system that is powered, in part, by solar cells.

Although the meters will not accept credit cards, they still accept coins. Nonetheless, parking enforcement officers were not writing citations Monday, Raymond said.

City Hall will keep the public updated, he said, to avoid frustration as much as possible.
