A man was shot Saturday when he tried to intervene in a robbery in Salt Lake City.

About 8:30 p.m., a man went into El Rey Del Pollo restaurant at 1320 S. Swaner Road and demanded money, said Salt Lake City police Lt. Josh Scharman. He apparently took some cash and fled, Scharman said.

An employee chased the man out of the door and enlisted the help of some patrons pulling into the parking lot, Scharman said. They joined in the foot chase.

North of the restaurant, the robber pulled out a gun and fired at his pursuers, Scharman said. One man was struck in the leg, and the others lost sight of the robber, Scharman said. A car was heard from behind a building nearby but wasn't seen.

The victim was taken to a hospital and was expected to survive.

The robber was described as a Latino in his early 20s, wearing a white jersey with black lettering or numbers, Scharman said.
