A Sandy man, previously convicted of sexual assault, now has been accused of raping another woman at his apartment after a date.
In charges filed Wednesday, police wrote that Michael Anthony Kooyman, 39, met the woman at a karaoke bar on June 15, exchanged phone numbers and took her out the next day to go swimming and drinking.
In jail documents, police wrote that the woman began to feel groggy and asked Kooyman to take her home. Instead, he took her to his Sandy home, where he showed her a case of handguns before she fell asleep, police wrote.
Kooyman allegedly took off the woman's swimsuit bottoms, restrained her arms and raped her, police wrote in Wednesday's charges. The woman said she was yelling at Kooyman to "just stop, just stop."
In previous jail documents, police wrote that Kooyman laughed at her and did not stop.
A nurse who examined the woman described the genital injuries as the worst she had ever seen.
The woman later told police she believes Kooyman drugged her while they were drinking at a bar, jail documents state. Police wrote that they found in his home a clear liquid believed to be the date-rape drug GHB. However, the criminal charges do not allege any drug-related crime.
Kooyman was charged with rape, object rape and forcible sodomy, first-degree felonies, and two lower felony counts of possession of a firearm by a restricted person.
In 2002, Kooyman was convicted by a 3rd District Court jury of second-degree felony forcible sexual abuse in an attack on his housekeeper.
He was sentenced to a year in jail, and his name was added to Utah's sex offender registry.
