A 47-year-old Salt Lake City man who shot and wounded his roommate in 2011 was sentenced earlier this month to prison.

Charles Jeffrey Knabel was ordered to spend two to 15 years in the Utah State Prison on a charge of aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury. The actual length of time Knabel spends behind bars will be determined by an independent board.

Knabel pleaded guilty in April to the aggravated assault charge, a second-degree felony, in a deal with prosecutors that spared him what could have been up to a life sentence.

He was originally charged with attempted murder, a first-degree felony.

Judge Katie Bernards-Goodman also ordered Knabel to pay restitution to the victim, the exact amount of which will be determined at a September hearing.

According to court documents, police found three roommates on the front porch of their home, 1576 S. 600 East, on Nov. 6, 2011. One of them was covered in blood.

When police interviewed the other two, one of the roommates said Knabel and the wounded man had been arguing, so he went downstairs to get away from them.

While he was in the basement, he said, he heard two loud booms. He ran upstairs to find Knabel had shot the other man.

The three men had been living together at the house for about a month before the shooting.

Knabel, who has been in custody since the attack, was transported to Utah State Prison on June 14.
