A 21-year-old man apparently jumped to his death from the roof of the Salt Lake City main library Monday afternoon, an event that prompted the closure of the library for the remainder of the day.
The man jumped off the southeast edge of the roof at about 4 p.m. and landed in the children's amphitheater, said Lt. Carl Merino. But police said no one was in the amphitheater at the time, and they do not believe any children witnessed the man's death.
The man used a chair to get to a section of the roof not normally accessible to the public, Merino said.
Police believe it was a suicide and not an accident, since the man apparently had posted something about ending his life on his Facebook page, Merino said.
Also, one person on the outside of the library, located at 400 South and 200 East, told police he saw the man approach the edge of the roof and jump off.
