Divers retrieved the body of a 26-year-old man who drowned in Pineview Reservoir Sunday afternoon.

The sheriff’s office is trying to notify the man’s family before disclosing his name. Dispatchers received a call about the drowning at 3:17 p.m. at Cemetery Point, a peninsula on the reservoir’s east side.

Deputies arrived to learn the man had been with a group of friends when he swam toward the slow no-wake buoys. But about 50 to 60 feet from the shore, he seemed to struggle and went under, said Weber County Sheriff’s Cpl. Mark Horton. The water is about 40 feet deep, he added.

"One of the friends witnessed it, tried to get over to help him but was not able to in time," Horton said.

Divers, working against low visibility, found his body about 9:30 p.m.

The reservoir is a popular spot for swimmers and boaters. An average of one person drowns there every year, Horton said.
