A teenager who escaped from a residential treatment school in Provo, then stole a vehicle and caused a fatal crash has been sentenced to confinement by the Youth Parole Authority, possibly until his 21st birthday.
The boy, who was 17 at the time of the crime but is now 18 and not from Utah, pleaded guilty earlier this year to felony manslaughter, burglary, stealing a motor vehicle and fleeing, authorities said.
The Salt Lake Tribune does not typically identify juveniles charged with crimes.
On May 2012, the teen escaped from the Provo Canyon School, a private residential treatment center for youth, and entered a home. When the homeowner returned, he found the teen wearing his clothes. The homeowner told him to leave and called police.
The teen found his way into a parking garage where he found a Mercedes SUV. He stole the vehicle and drove back to the Provo Canyon School, where he taunted staff.
When Provo police found him later that evening and attempted to pull him over, he fled.
The teen reached the Interstate 15 interchange and struck a car, killing 65-year-old passenger Alexandra "Sammy" Ogren, of Mapleton, and critically injuring her husband.
