A massive search-and-rescue effort on foot, horseback and in the air ended Wednesday when the body of a missing 22-year-old Brigham Young University student was found.
Tyler Mayle, of Windsor, Colo., had been missing since Saturday when he went hiking in the hills east of campus near the "Y" Mountain trail. Earlier this week, police had located Mayle's car parked near the popular trail, and pings of his phone off of area cell towers had indicated the device was in the general area of Eagle Pass Trail.
Searchers found Mayle's body about 8:40 p.m. at the bottom of a 65-foot cliff near Eagle Pass, south of the Y trailhead, said Provo police Lt. Mathew Siufanua.
"It appears he did fall," Siufanua said. Investigators are inspecting the scene for any clues to the circumstances of Mayle's fall. Authorities had closed down the "Y" Mountain trail to conduct a grid search of the area.
Mayle's parents, Gary and Lori Mayle, were on the scene Wednesday, too, having arrived from Colorado overnight.
Gary Mayle said his son had extensive backwoods experience.
"Tyler could tough it out. He's an Eagle Scout and has spent many times on the mountains with me as a child elk hunting" and hiking, the elder Mayle said while the search was still underway. "He knows what it takes to take care of himself."
"He would know that we would come looking for him," the father added.
More than 50 searchers, some on horseback, aided by 10 dogs and a Utah Highway Patrol helicopter, were involved in Wednesday's efforts.
Tyler Mayle was a junior at BYU, studying communications and political science.
