Salt Lake City police say an argument between a drunken man and his father escalated into an assault ... with a wooden spoon.

Neighbors called 911 after they were unsuccessful in stopping the 33-year-old man's attack on the partially disabled 71-year-old father. The spoon apparently splintered during the fight, resulting in numerous non-life threatening stab wounds to the older man's upper body.

Police said the victim also suffered scrapes and bruises to the head and neck during the 10 p.m. Monday altercation near 1600 W. 1000 North.

When officers arrived, the son remained combative, took a fighting stance and swung at the officers as he refused demands to surrender, said Detective Mike Hamideh. At that point, one of the officers used a Taser to shock the suspect into submission.

The suspect was booked into Salt Lake County Jail on suspicion of domestic aggravated assault, abuse of a vulnerable adult and resisting arrest.

The father was in fair condition Tuesday at a local hospital.
