A viewing for Beverley Taylor Sorenson, an advocate for arts and education and an influential philanthropist, is set for Friday, May 31, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Big Cottonwood Stake Center (1750 Spring Lane, Salt Lake City).

Funeral services will follow at noon at the Big Cottonwood Stake Center.

Sorenson died peacefully, surrounded by family, of natural causes Monday at age 89.

With her late husband, James LeVoy Sorenson, she created the Sorenson Legacy Foundation, which donates millions of dollars each year to support cultural, educational, scientific and community-focused projects. In 1995 she established Art Works for Kids, a foundation that supports fine arts education in dance, drama, music and visual arts for elementary students in Utah, through partnerships with universities, school districts and community arts organizations.

The Beverley Taylor Sorenson Arts Learning Program, which integrates arts instruction into core curriculum, first received state funding in 2008 and it will reach tens of thousands of students at approximately 130 Utah elementary schools in the 2013-14 school year.

Sorenson is survived by her two sons, six daughters, 49 grandchildren and 65 great-grandchildren.
