Investigators have identified a man who fell 200 feet to his death at Utah County's Bridal Veil Falls.
Utah County Sheriff's Sgt. Spencer Cannon said the victim is a 49-year-old man who lived in the county, but declined to provide his name until the man's family has been notified. Sheriff's deputies found him at the bottom of the popular Provo Canyon site about 8 p.m. Wednesday, and it appears he committed suicide, Cannon said.
Efforts to identify the victim were complicated by extensive head injuries that rendered the man's face unrecognizable.
No climbing equipment was found on the man or near him at the bottom of the falls. However, while trails leading up to the top of the falls are rugged, Cannon said it was "not terribly unusual" for people to climb the site without equipment.
"It is a difficult route and you have to be careful, but it's not impossible to get to where he fell without climbing gear," Cannon said. "Our investigators [went] back there today to see if they could find any personal or other items in the daylight we might have missed as it got dark [Wednesday] night."
