A southwest Salt Lake City father accused of apparently striking his young son with a baseball bat over the weekend remained behind bars Monday.

Police said the 44-year-old man was arrested about 6 p.m. Saturday near 1700 South Riverside Drive (1100 West) after witnesses said they saw him chasing his 6-year-old boy and striking him on the back with the bat, and also punching the boy in the face.

The father was arrested and booked into the Salt Lake County jail, where is was being held in lieu of $20,623 bail on suspicion of second-degree felony intentional child abuse and an unrelated class B misdemeanor count of theft of services.

The child was reported to be in good condition with minor injuries after having been transported to the hospital for evaluation.
