Driver whose car hit three children in Midvale was allegedly texting
Three girls went to the hospital Tuesday after a man who was allegedly texting while driving hit them in a Midvale crosswalk.
About 3:40 p.m., the girls, ages 14, 10 and 9, were on their way home from school when they walked through the crosswalk near 700 W. Wasatch Street (8000 South).
They were struck by a 28-year-old man behind the wheel of a southbound Mazda Protege, said Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal.
The youngest girl was taken to Intermountain Medical Center with critical head injuries. She was later transferred to Primary Children's Medical Center and upgraded to fair condition.
The older girls were also taken to IMC with serious injuries, and as of Tuesday evening had also been upgraded to minor injuries.
Hoyal could not confirm if any of the girls are sisters.
The crosswalk is clearly marked, but it appears the driver was texting, Hoyal said. He was not hurt and is cooperating with police.
"It's a very sad reminder that texting while driving is extremely dangerous," Hoyal added.
UPD is still investigating the accident.
