Three teenage boys who allegedly confessed to setting a fire at a Mormon chapel in Magna have been released to their parents pending possible charges of arson.

Unified Fire Authority Capt. Clint Mecham said Tuesday that it will be up to the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office to decide what charges will be brought against the three in connection with the early Monday morning blaze at 7525 W. 3735 South.

Meacham did not release the boys' names or ages. He said the boys did live in the immediate area of the church, but he did not know if they were members of the congregation.

Mecham said that investigators looking into the 7:35 a.m. Monday blaze received a tip about the juveniles possibly being involved. After investigators contacted the three, they allegedly confessed to breaking into the building and torching hymnals.

The flames quickly spread throughout the chapel causing an estimated $500,000 in damages.
