A South Jordan man had to be flown to a hospital Monday after a van rolled over the lower half of his body.

The 23-year-old man was working on a Ford service van when it unexpectedly rolled forward, crushing his pelvic region and lower abdomen, according South Jordan Fire Battalion Chief Reed Thompson. Crews responded to the accident about 4:30 p.m. and the man was flown via helicopter to University Hospital.

The accident happened at garage behind a home at 2180 W. 11400 South, Thompson said. The man evidently thought the van was in park when it was actually in neutral. As it began to roll forward it knocked the man down and made contact with another vehicle. Thompson said the van was already off the man when authorities arrived.

Authorities have not released the man’s name.

Thompson added that people should take extra precautions and ensure that vehicles are secured while doing auto work.
