Taylorsville • Kids are dreaming big when it comes to what they want in Bennion Park.
"I'd like to see some zip lines and some climbing things," said Chris Small, 12. "I'd also like things for smaller kids, like a kiddie park."
And, he added, shaded areas would be nice at the park, which covers about 4 acres at 5600 S. 3200 West.
Hunter Layton, 11, also wants a zip line, as well as swings. Bailee Lefler's wish list included a zip line, a rock climbing wall, swings and monkey bars.
Nearly 100 people, many of them children, gathered at the park on Tuesday to give input on what kind of playground they would like for their neighborhood park.
New items will be bought to replace the old equipment, which was destroyed in an April 27 fire. Fire investigators believe someone used an accelerant to set the blaze, which caused an estimated $12,000 in damage.
Rhetta McIff, neighborhood services coordinator, along with Mayor Jerry Rechtenbach and City Council member Dama Barbour, polled the group on what it wanted. The neighbors favored a mix of traditional equipment and pieces with a newer design.
The layout isn't finalized, but McIff expects the playground to include swings and a web climber, which is a spider web-like structure. Zip lines are out. There will be a mix of colors, include purple, a crowd favorite.
A budget has not been set, though insurance money will help pay for the new equipment.
"We need to get this fixed," McIff said of the charred playground. "You guys deserve to have something good to play on."
Barbour said Bennion Park will be even better than it was before.
