Woman dies, man critically hurt in West Valley crash
A woman was killed and a man critically injured in a head-on collision in West Valley City late Thursday morning.
West Valley City police Sgt. Jason Hauer said the woman was driving a silver Hyundai westbound when she drifted into the oncoming lane and struck an eastbound Dodge Caravan head-on about 10 a.m. at 4100 South and 1100 West.
Lt. Scott Buchanan later identified the woman as 28-year-old Erin Fritz of Salt Lake City and the man as 70-year-old Michael Steed of Farmington.
The cause of the accident was under investigation, but drugs or alcohol were not believed to have been factors, nor was Fritz believed to have been distracted by cell phone use.
"It is unusual, though," Hauer said. "That roadway has two lanes in both directions and a center lane. She drifted pretty far. We will be looking at a possible medical problem, among other things."
Fritz was dead at the scene. Steed reportedly was taken by ambulance to Intermountain Medical Center in Murray in critical condition, though he is expected to survive, said Lt. Scott Buchanan.
