Five educators from Utah's coal country received $3,500 checks Wednesday from the Arch Coal Foundation during its seventh annual "Teacher Achievement Awards" program at Gunnison Valley High School in Gunnison.

Gov. Gary Herbert accompanied Paul Lang, Arch Coal's executive vice president and chief operating officer, as he presented trophies, classroom plaques and checks to:

• Kathy S. Anderson, Salina Elementary School

• Kelly Peterson, North Sevier High School in Salina

• Jesse Burrell and Mark Lyons, both Gunnison Valley High School

• Reed Fehlberg, Canyon View Junior High School in Huntington

"These award-winning teachers set high standards and challenge their students to do their best," said Lang. "Today's teachers play pivotal roles in the success of our students and communities."

Next to parents, Herbert said, teachers have the greatest influence over children by "nurturing their intellect and shaping their understanding of the greater world. We honor [these teachers'] service in the classroom and their inspirational contribution to the future of Utah and its children."

He also expressed appreciation for the educational support of Arch Coal, whose Utah subsidiary is the state's largest producer of coal. Canyon Fuel Co. operates the Sufco mine in Sevier County and the Dugout Canyon and Skyline mines in Carbon County, excavating 9 million tons of coal in 2012 and employing about 700 people.

Teachers from the counties in Utah's coal country — Carbon, Emery, Sanpete and Sevier — were eligible for the awards, co-sponsored by the Utah Education Association, State Office of Education, five local school districts, the Utah School Superintendents Association and numerous businesses and radio stations in central Utah.
