A late-morning fire on Thursday heavily damaged an apartment in Millcreek, leaving its two occupants looking for a new home.

Unified Fire Capt. Clint Mecham said the 10:42 a.m. blaze at the Country Lake Apartments, 355 E. Wood Bridge Dr. (4050 South), initially forced evacuation of several other units next to and below the second-story unit where flames were first spotted.

Crews arrived within four minutes of the initial 911 call and spotted flames and smoke coming from the second-story unit's balcony. The fire blew out a window and had moved into the unit's kitchen area, but the flames were soon extinguished.

However, that unit was deemed no long viable for occupancy, Mecham said. The occupants were being assisted by apartment complex management in finding another, temporary residence.

Mecham said smoke was cleared from the other units and residents were being allowed to return early Thursday afternoon.

The cause of the fire was under investigation, but it appeared to have started on the balcony.

A damage estimate was not immediately available.
