A bicyclist was in critical condition Monday night after being hit by a sport utility vehicle at the intersection of 500 South and 500 West in downtown Salt Lake City.

Salt Lake City police Lt. Carl Merino said the 53-year-old man was attempting to cross the busy intersection against a red light just before the on-ramp to Interstate 15 and Interstate 80. Merino said the driver was driving with a green light and struck the cyclist, who was wearing all black, at about 8:50 p.m.

Merino said the man was in critical condition with severe injuries to his abdominal area and his head. He was not wearing a helmet.

"He's not doing well," Merino said.

The cyclist was transported to University Hospital.

Merino said he did not anticipate any citations for the female driver of the SUV. No other injuries were reported.
