Two incidents at a downtown Salt Lake City homeless shelter, one of them involving an alleged attack on officers, kept police busy on Wednesday night.
About 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, officers were called after a 47-year-old man was beaten and robbed at knifepoint of $50 in cash outside the Road Home men's shelter, 211 S. 500 West. One of three suspects, a 45-year-old male, was located and arrested. The victim was taken to the hospital in serious condition, police said.
The suspect was booked into Salt Lake County Jail on suspicion of first-degree felony counts of aggravated robbery and aggravated assault and numerous other misdemeanors relating to other, unconnected allegations of shoplifting, drug possession and traffic violations.
A little more than two hours later, officers patrolling in the same area were confronted by a 34-year-old homeless man. When officers on patrol approached, the suspect attempted to take a bicycle from a passer-by, and failing in that suddenly lurched toward the officers.
A Taser was deployed to subdue him, and officers allegedly found a drug pipe on his person after arresting him.
The suspect was booked into jail on suspicion of misdemeanor counts of assaulting police officers, diorderly conduct and possession of drug paraphernalia.
