A former Riverton High School math and basketball teacher has been charged in the sexual abuse of a 17-year-old student.
Courtney Louise Jarrell, 22, was charged Friday in 3rd District Court with object rape, a first-degree felony and forcible sexual abuse, a second-degree felony.
Prosecutors allege that Jarrell had a sexual encounter with a female student between February and March, according to court documents. During the encounter, Jarrell is accused of touching the student's breasts and genitals while the teen was at the teacher's Salt Lake County residence.
Jordan School District spokeswoman Sandra Riesgraf said Monday that Jarrell resigned from her position on Friday, although the teacher had been suspended since the sex-abuse complaint came to the school last month.
"We immediately looked into it, and within hours of the complaint, she was suspended, and everything was turned over to Draper police," Riesgraf said. "We felt that it was something that rose to that level [of police involvement]."
Riesgraf said Jarrell has been with the district for less than a year.
Jarrell is scheduled to make her initial appearance in court on May 16.
