The University of Utah broke ground Friday on a new $50.4 million student recreation center.
The long-awaited and nearly 190,000-square-foot George S. Eccles Student Life Center will have three pools, five sport courts, four fitness studios, climbing walls and 15,000 square feet for cardiovascular and weight training, as well as a cafe and study nooks, according to a U. press release. The project will be paid for through a student-approved bond, the school's administration and non-student user fees. It is also funded by donations from the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation, Kem and Carolyn Gardner and the University Federal Credit Union. The groundbreaking comes after 10 years of planning and fundraising.
To be located just west of the George S. Eccles 2002 Legacy Bridge and close to the Fort Douglas TRAX light-rail stop, the center is slated to open in December 2014.
