A woman may owe quick-acting passers-by for escaping her wrecked minivan before it burst into flames.

West Valley City Fire Department spokesman Bob Fitzgerald said the 43-year-old woman’s minivan rolled after being involved in a crash with a pickup truck on Bangerter Highway near the South Frontage Road (2100 South) about 10:20 a.m. Thursday.

Witnesses reported that immediately following the crash, the minivan began smoking. Seeing the woman struggling to get clear, several other motorists stopped and helped her to safety.

Fitzgerald said when firefighters arrived they found the minivan engulfed in flames.

The woman was transported by ambulance to Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, where she was initially reported to be in fair condition.

The male driver of the pickup truck was treated at the scene and released.

West Valley City police were investigating the cause of the accident.
