Horse killed, but humans escape serious injury in Tooele crash

A vehicle rolled off a Tooele County roadway Saturday night after it hit and killed a horse.

Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Bob Gutierrez said a pickup was traveling eastbound about 10 p.m. on State Road 138 just east of Grantsville when it struck a black horse.

The impact sent the horse into a Suburban that was traveling just behind the pickup.

The Suburban, carrying four people, hit the horse, went off the roadway and rolled. Injuries including cuts and broken bones were reported, but everyone was expected to survive, Gutierrez said. The two occupants of the pickup were not injured.

He said everyone was wearing a seat belt, and that likely prevented any human fatalities.

Three other horses on the roadway were not struck and fled the scene, he said. Troopers were not able to immediately locate them or their owner.
