Richfield police confirmed Friday that a 10-year-old boy has been charged with theft of a firearm and possession a firearm at school.
Investigation into the Pahvant Elementary School fifth-grader's motives, including whether he may have been bullied, was ongoing.
Police said the handgun was .22-caliber, but they would not discuss further details, including whether the boy was released to his family or was in juvenile detention.
However, Sevier School District Superintendent Myron Mickelsen said the boy had been suspended for an unspecified amount of time.
He allegedly brought the gun in his backpack to the school at 520 N. 300 West on Tuesday. Another student noticed the weapon and reported it to school administrators Tuesday afternoon.
Police said earlier that the firearm was believed to have been taken from a family friend Monday night.
