Orem police nab two suspects in Maverik armed robbery
Orem police have arrested two suspects in the armed robbery of a Maverik gas station.
Police Sgt. Craig Martinez said the arrests one involving an 18-year-old man early Wednesday morning and the second a 17-year-old male on Wednesday afternoon stemmed from the holdup of the convenience store at 85 W. 800 North.
Two masked men, one brandishing a handgun, came into the store 11:16 p.m. Tuesday and ordered the clerk to give them cigarettes and money from the cash register. They then ran from the store.
Officers quickly arrived and set up a containment area, and about 45 minutes later the 18-year-old suspect was spotted and a foot pursuit ensued. The suspect initially eluded police, but about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, he was found hiding behind a shed, questioned and arrested.
Information obtained during the first suspect's interview led police to identify and, at 4 p.m. Wednesday, arrest the 17 year old, Martinez said.
Cash allegedly taken from the store, along with what proved to be a handgun replica BB pistol, were recovered.
The 18-year-old old was booked into Utah County Jail on suspicion of aggravated robbery and fleeing a police officer. The 17-year-old was booked into a juvenile detention facility on suspicion of aggravated robbery, fleeing police and possession of tobacco by a minor.
