An Ogden police officer was dragged several feet by a fleeing car following a traffic stop on Saturday, prompting a pursuit through the city's streets that ended with both a crash and a foot chase.
Two officers had stopped the 27-year-old driver near 9th Street and Liberty Avenue for a traffic violation just before 8 p.m., said Ogden police Lt. Will Cragun said. Police discovered the man was wanted on a warrant and asked him to get out of the car, but he refused and drove off. An officer who had reached into the vehicle got his long-sleeved shirt caught on either the door or the window and was dragged several feet, Cragun said.
The second officer gave chase, following the Honda Civic to 12th Street, where the driver clipped two vehicles before losing control of his car and crashing into a street sign. The man then fled on foot through a field and jumped several fences, Cragun said.
Police eventually found him hiding in a backyard, but had to deploy a Taser when the man resisted arrest. Officers found the man had illegal drugs in his pockets, Cragun said.
The man was taken to an area hospital for a medical evaluation and was expected to be booked into the Weber Count jail overnight, Cragun said. He will be held on the outstanding misdemeanor warrant and for investigation of multiple charges, including drug possession.
A 20-year-old woman who also was in the man's car was questioned at the scene and released, he said.
The officer who was dragged suffered only minor injuries and was treated and released at the scene.
