A new — but temporary — Utah County Attorney will take over the office after current Utah County Attorney Jeffrey Buhman leaves Wednesday for a 10-month-long deployment to Afghanistan with the National Guard.

Buhman said Chief Deputy Utah County Attorney Tim Taylor will fill his position in his absence.

The Utah County Republican Party was tasked with nominating three people to fill Buhman's post. According to a campaign blog maintained by Taylor, Craig Johnson and Ben Stanley were also nominated for the top attorney position.

The Utah County Commission ultimately picked Taylor as Buhman's replacement.

The Utah National Guard reported that 35 soldiers are scheduled to leave Wednesday for Camp Shelby, Miss., for several weeks of training before heading overseas to Afghanistan.

Buhman said he's served in the National Guard for about 15 years, but this will be his first deployment.
