A man and a woman who were arrested last week for allegedly stealing more than $1,000 from a troop of Girl Scouts selling cookies in Taylorsville have each been charged with felony theft.

According to charges filed in 3rd District Court on Monday, Steven Andrew Kvenvold, 24, and Kayla Marie Long, 24, were responsible for the brazen theft on March 19 that rallied the community in support of the young victims. Court documents state that a car driven by Long had been circling the Wal-Mart parking lot in Taylorsville, 5469 S. Redwood Road (1700 West), where the troop had set up a sales table. One of the troop leaders told police that Kvenvold later came out and started talking to the girls about the cookies. He suddenly grabbed a cash envelope off the table and ran into the car. Charging documents state Kvenvold took about $1,400.

Court documents also reference a statement from Long, who allegedly told police that Kvenvold told her to drop him off in front of the store and to take off when he came back. She then saw Kvenvold go up to the table and dash back into her car saying: "Drive, drive." She told police that Kvenvold gave her some of the money and that he kept the rest.

Long was arrested a few days after the theft on unrelated warrants. Kvenvold turned himself into police on March 20 after he was publicly identified by police.

Kvenvold allegedly admitted to the theft, according to court documents. They were each charged with one count of third-degree felony theft.
