Salt Lake City police said Monday they had identified a suspect in an alleged weekend kidnapping attempt and were hoping soon to make an arrest.

Detective Rick Wall declined to release specific details on the suspect's identity, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation.

The purported abduction occurred about 11:50 p.m. Friday in the 400 West block of Hope Avenue (1405 South). A woman, 24, had called her boyfriend to say a male had her inside his car would not let her out. The boyfriend drove to the scene, and when he arrived the woman tried again to exit the car but was pulled back inside by the suspect.

The suspect then drove away with the woman still inside the vehicle with the boyfriend close behind him. During the ensuing chase, police say, the suspect rammed the boyfriend's car, at which time the woman finally was able to escape.

The suspect drove away and remained at large Monday, Wall said.

"We have a good idea who he is and our detectives have good leads they are working," Wall said.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to call Salt Lake City police at 801-799-3000.
