Police and SWAT units responded to a Midvale home Thursday, where a man barricaded himself inside for just over an hour before surrendering.
The incident began at 10:30 a.m. when officers arrived at 7790 S. Oak St. (480 West) to talk to the 28-year-old man. Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal said he was the subject of a vehicle burglary investigation and also had several outstanding felony warrants.
According to Hoyal, a resident of the home let police inside and directed them to a back room. When officers reached the back room, the man said he wasn't coming out and claimed to have a gun.
Officers then retreated and called SWAT units. The man stayed barricaded inside the home until about 11:45 a.m., when he surrendered. Hoyal did not immediately know what prompted the surrender or if the man actually had a gun.
Hoyal said the man was taken into custody on the outstanding warrants and could face additional charges for resisting arrest.
The property where the standoff happened borders Midvale Elementary School and Midvale Middle School, which both went on lockdown just after 11 a.m. The lockdowns ended at about noon.
Canyons School District spokeswoman Jennifer Toomer-Cook said parents were alerted via robo call about the beginning and end of the lockdowns. Toomer-Cook also said everything went according to protocol and all children remained safe.
