Orem police say a trail of oil led them to a hit-and-run driver.
Police learned of the accident at 3:41 a.m. Thursday when a man saw a "for rent" sign shoved into the driver’s side window of his Chevrolet Cobalt, according to Orem Sgt. Craig Martinez. Martinez said it looked like someone shoved the sign into the car to make the damage look like vandalism. The car was parked on the street at 525 N. 200 East.
But police soon discovered additional damage to the car that looked like a hit and run, and Martinez explained that the sign was apparently an attempt to obscure what really happened. Then the officers looked at the ground.
"And they saw this oil trail," Martinez said.
Police followed the oil trail for several blocks and discovered a older Chevrolet Suburban parked in a "large oil spill," according to Martinez. Officers found the driver of the Suburban at a nearby home and cited him with a misdemeanor for leaving the scene of an accident.
