For 81,000 customers, garbage fees due differently now

About 81,000 people who live in Taylorsville, Herriman, Cottonwood Heights, Holladay, part of Murray and unincorporated Salt Lake County will soon receive bills for their 2013 sanitation service.

Such payments to Salt Lake County Sanitation have been handled differently in the past, having been included on property tax bills instead.

However, as of Jan. 1, 2013, the trash-collecting service changed its name to Wasatch Front Waste and Recycling Service. Since the fees charged for this service do not qualify as a tax, by law they can no longer be collected by way of the property tax bill.

Instead, sanitation bills will be sent out this month.

"To make it as easy as possible on our customers, they can pay in one, two, or six payments," Pam Roberts, executive director of Wasatch Front Waste said in a statement.

While payment method has changed, rates remain the same, Roberts added.

The 2013 fees, due in full by August 15, are payable by check, credit card or automatic withdrawals set up through Xpress Bill Pay. For more information, go to wasatchfrontwaste.org or email questions to info@wasatchfrontwaste.org.

The change, enacted by the Salt Lake County Council, aim to establish more local control of the service.
