Officers searching the area located a car linked to Mendez-Gutierrez parked outside the motel, and subsequently identified his room. He was taken into custody without incident.
Mendez-Gutierrez was booked into Salt Lake County Jail on a fugitive from justice warrant. He was being held without bail pending expected extradition proceedings by Idaho authorities.
Mendez-Gutierrez was the subject of a first-degree murder warrant in the stabbing death of 24-year-old Alejandro Perez Lopez. Gooding police also were seeking a second, so far unidentified suspect, also believed to have fled Idaho.
