South Salt Lake police are investigating a State Street accident that left a woman critically injured Saturday night.

The woman was struck about 7:20 p.m. by a Toyota Prius while she was crossing from the west to east near 3605 S. State Street, South Salt Lake Police spokesman Gary Keller said. The Prius was headed north on State Street when the accident occurred.

The woman, who police believe is in her 20s, had not yet been identified late Saturday. She was struck while near thecenter of the road and was not in a crosswalk, Keller said.

The woman was taken to an area hospital in "extremely critical condition," he said.

Police temporarily closed all northbound lanes of State Street at 3800 South in order to conduct their investigation.

Motorists were advised to use an alternate route.
