A two-alarm warehouse fire had West Jordan firefighters scrambling Monday night, but crews were able to keep damages down thanks to the building’s quickly activated sprinkler system.

West Jordan Fire Chief Marc McElreath said Tuesday that while a firm damage assessment was still being determined from the 7:15 p.m. Monday blaze at the Intermountain Sweeper Co. building at 6975 S. Airport Road (4570 West), the structure’s sprinklers kept the flames contained to the west area of the warehouse.

"The structure is sound, and it will mostly be smoke and water damage," McElreath said.

Hot metal shavings from a grinding operation ignited nearby cardboard boxes. The resulting smoke triggered the first alarm, and firefighters called a second alarm upon arrival.

The company does repair and maintenance work on street sweeping vehicles and "walk behind" flooring scrubbers.

McElreath said it took about 45 minutes for crews to completely extinguish the fire.

No injuries were reported to either employees or firefighters.
