A Provo police officer shot and injured a pit bull Monday after being attacked by the dog while trying to serve a drug search warrant.
The dog charged the officer as police tried to force their way into the residence, 996 E. Cedar Ave., just after 1:30 p.m., Provo Lt. Mathew Siufanua said in a news release.

Police knocked on the door several times and the homeowner answered, but slammed the door when he saw it was police. After officers forced open the door, the dog ran out, attacking an officer standing on the front porch.
The officer tried to back away, but lost his balance and shot the dog while falling backwards, Siufanua said.
The dog was shot in the upper left shoulder and ran away. It was found three blocks away and capture by animal control officers who took the dog to a local shelter for medical treatment.
The dog’s condition was not known Monday evening.
The resident was arrested and booked into the Utah County jail for investigation of multiple charges, including resisting arrest, drug paraphernalia possession, marijuana distribution and possession of spice.
