Two Logan-area men died Saturday after a head-on collision near the lines of Box Elder and Cache counties.

The collision occurred about 6 p.m. on State Road 30 near its intersection with State Road 23, Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Lee Perry said.

The driver, 70-year-old Terry Barnett, and his 33-year-old son, Nicholas Barnett, both of North Logan, were headed east toward Logan when a sport utility vehicle struck them head on. The collision caused the pickup to roll off the road, Perry said.

Both men died at the scene. They were wearing seat belts, Perry said.

The driver of the SUV, a 47-year-old man from Brigham City, was injured and unconscious, Perry said. He was taken to Logan Regional Medical Center, though his injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, Perry said.

Witnesses told UHP troopers the westbound SUV passed them minutes before the crash.

An initial investigation suggests the SUV was traveling too fast for the conditions on the slick and snow-packed road, losing control and crossing the center line of the highway.
